Please make sure that you allow a minimum of 1 hour and 15 minutes in between flights in (HNL) Honolulu. Minimum connecting time is 30 minutes for flights connecting thru (OGG) Kahalui, Maui. To ensure that your baggage can be checked all the way through to Molokai (MKK)--check with your mainland to Hawaii airline to see which inter-island carrier they can check your baggage on before booking.
The airport code for Molokai is MKK. The airport is located in Ho'olehua, Molokai.
Airlines that service Molokai:
Ohana By Hawaiian 800-367-5230 operates 48 passenger turboprop aircraft ATR-42 to/from Honolulu departing from the the Inter-Island Terminal. If you are traveling to Molokai on the same day as your mainland flight, check with your mainland carrier to see if your baggage can be checked all the way through to Molokai.
Mokulele Airlines 866-260-7070 operates 9 seater Cessna, single engine aircrafts to/from Honolulu departing from the Commuter Terminal.
Makani Kai Air 808-834-1111 small plane operator with 8 round trips to Honolulu daily. FROM HONOLULU THEY DEPART FROM THE OTHER SIDE OF THE RUNWAYS---a cab ride is necessary if you are making any connections to any other carrier.
A SPECIAL NOTE REGARDING YOUR CHECKED BAGGAGE ON YOUR DEPARTURE FROM MOLOKAI:
On your return home, if you are traveling on Ohana By Hawaiian, in order for your baggage to be checked beyond Honolulu to the mainland, they must be inspected by a State of Hawaii agricultural inspection agent. While they do operate on Molokai, their hours are limited to the following hours:
Ho’olehua, Moloka’i (MKK)
|Mon- Fri||5:30am - 10:00am .|
I have been told that if you are departing on the first morning flight with Ohana by Hawaiian, they can check your baggage through to your final destination on the mainland. Ohana by Hawaiian will not hold your baggage for one of their later flights. On those flights, you will have to claim your baggage in Honolulu or Maui and recheck it in with your next carrier. If you are traveling on Mokulele or Makani Kai Air, you will have to pick up your checked baggage and proceed to your mainland carrier to recheck your bags.
The island of Molokai is also serviced by a 100 foot, 149 passenger ferry from Maui. The "Molokai Princess" leaves daily from the Lahaina Harbor (Pier #3) daily at 7:15am and at 6:00pm. It takes 90 minutes to Molokai and is approximately $70 each way. It arrives on the Molokai's southern shores at Kaunakakai Harbor. The return times depart Molokai at 5:30am and at 4:00pm. Whales are often spotted during the cruise. If you fly in to Maui, you will have to get transportation to Lahaina. It is about 45 minutes by taxi. I have heard of a shuttle from Lahaina to the Kmart in Kahului for $3.00. I was told that it runs every 90 minutes. Kmart is about 1 mile from the airport. However, flying is faster and easier. Plus, the flight from Maui to Molokai is very spectactular. You will see the sea cliffs of Molokai's north shore...which are the tallest in the world! They can be contacted at 866-440-6284.
If you have never been to Molokai, you will need a car to see the island and to get around. Distances are long and there isn't public transportation. Cars on the island can sell out in advance due to large funtions, i.e. weddings, reunions, etc. Be sure to plan accordingly. They can also be expensive. For our confirmed guests, I can often find you a "local" car to rent through a private individual saving you $$$.
Alamo Rent a Car (800 462-5266) is the only national brand car rental company located at the airport (MKK) on Molokai. They are open daily from 6:00am to 7:00pm and their local phone number is 808-567-6289. (No answer machine. Calls are not answered when assisting customers at counter.)
Local knowledge: Best weekly rates are for Sunday-Monday-Tuesday arrivals.
Discounted rates best found on-line. Search Google for discount codes for your rental and also try www.DiscountHawaiiCarRental.com using "Brand 5" for rates for Molokai rentals.
($5.66 gal. for regular unleaded gas as of 9/20/2014.)
There are only two gas stations to obtain gas for your car on the island. Note: There is no gas station at the airport, West End or East End of the island.
- Kaunakakai has two service stations-

KALAPAUPA (Hansen's Disease Colony)
You can take the mule ride, hike or fly down to this isolated peninsula which is a National Historic Park. This part of Molokai was made famous by Father Damien, a Belgian priest who came to the settlement in 1873 to help those stricken by the disease. The disease was brought under control by sulfone drugs in the 1940's. Today, fewer than 20 people remain in Kalaupapa and they are free to come and go as they please.
The tour at Kalaupapa takes a maximum of 30 participants. It operates everyday except on Sunday. It is an all day tour. If you fly or walk in - you must bring your own lunch. You may want to book this trip prior to your arrival. The mule trip is memorable but the plane ride is faster, easier and cheaper!
DAMIEN TOURS: 808-567-6171 – call for Kalaupapa tour reservations 7-9 am or 5-7 pm. $40 per person for tour only (if you walk in).
To fly in/out contact Makani Kai Air at 808-834-1111. They can book the tour for you. (Bring a book to read--you may have to wait for the hikers and the mule riders before your tour will begin.)
Or, experience the thrill of a lifetime and ride a mule down to the colony! Contact MOLOKAI

Monthly hiking tours of Kamakou Preserve on the east end and the Moomoomi Sand Dunes on the northwest corner of the island. We did the trip to Moomoomi in May of 2004 . It was fabulous and well worth the suggested $25 donation per person. They use their 4-wheel drive vehicles to take you to their destinations and provide an indepth lecture of the surroundings. Plan to bring your own sack lunch. And, be sure to reserve early. They only take a handful of people and the spots fill up early.
We also had the opportunity to visit the Kamakou Preserve (Molokai's rain forest) on 6 different occasions (we go as often as possible!). It is an experience of a lifetime! Again, they use their 4-wheel drive vehicles to take you to the preserve via a 10 mile dirt, mud and rock road! It's almost like a Disneyland ride! Then, you'll walk approximately 1 1/2 miles on 2 x 8 wooden planks (wrapped in metal mesh to keep you from slipping) through the rainforest. In addition to all of that beauty, you will come to the end where you'll enjoy your home packed sack lunch high in the mountains at the Pelekuna lookout. It is like lunching in heaven! The lookout is spectacular! Words cannot describe it. You just have to do it!

GUIDED HIKE TO RAINFALLS IN HALAWA VALLEY
Call Eddie Tanaka, 808-558-8396 for a personal guided walking tour through the Halawa Valley to the waterfalls. Give Eddie a call. He offers great rates and great local information. He lives down in the East End between mile markers 20 and 21. Tell him that we said "Hello"!!
Kalani Pruet of Halawa Tropical Flowers Farm & Falls Tours can also take you on a personally guided hike to the falls and on a tour of his flower farm for a lower price. Call Kalani at 808-336-1149. You can email him at firstname.lastname@example.org or visit his website at molokaiflowers.com.
East End-Sacred Waters is owned and operated by Karen Noble. The setting is incredible. She welcomes all levels. Bring a bathing suit if you want to swim after class! Be sure to call her to tell her you're coming. And, don't wear a watch....her classes often run 3 hours long! But who wants to stop anyway! Her location is between mile markers 17 and 18 on the east end of the island. Be prepared to spend 1 hour each way from the west end. She suggests a rate of $10 to $20 for each class. I always pay her at least $15. It is well worth it.

There currently are no restaurants servicing the Kaluakoi Resort area. There are hopes that the restaurant at the old Sheraton (now owned by the Molokai Ranch) will reopen with the hotel at some point in the future.

There are no “super-markets” on Molokai but you should be able to find what you need (not always what you want) at one of the islands markets.
Kaluakoi Resort Market –This market is open daily from 9:00am to 6:00pm and offers snack foods, beverages, sundries, crafts and gifts.
Maunaloa General Store – This store is located up at the Maunaloa Village and has a terrific selection of just about anything you need or might want. They are open 8:00 am - 6:00 pm Mon-Sat and 9:00 am - noon on Sunday.
Kumu Farms -

“In Town” – Kaunakakai
Misaki’s Groceries & Friendly Market - Both are located on the same side of the street in town and are the most well-stocked markets on the island. Misaki's usually has the best prices on alcohol. Misaki's is open Mon-Sat from 8:30am to 8:30pm and on Sunday's from 9:00am to 12noon. Friendly's is open Mon-Fri from 8:30am to 8:30pm, Sat. 8:30am to 6:30pm and is closed on Sundays. Both accept credit cards.
Molokai Wine & Spirits – This “liquor” market is across the street from Misaki’s and carries a very good selection of wines and spirits. In addition, you can often get some specialty cheeses and other goodies for some upscale snacks and additions to your meals. Credit cards accepted. They are open 9:00 am - 10:00pm Sun-Thurs and 9::00 am - 10:30pm Fri & Sat.
Outpost Natural Foods – Excellent source for natural and organic foods. They have a small take-out kitchen that makes vegetarian sandwiches and salads. Very reasonably priced and the food is good. Their hours are 9:00am - 6:00pm Mon-Thur, 9:00am - 4:00pm on Fridays and 9:00am - 5:00pm on Sunday. They are closed on Saturdays.
Kualapuu has a general market with a good meat counter. It is next to “Kamuela’s Cookhouse” restaurant. It is probably closed on Sundays too.
The only place to buy groceries at this end of the island is at the Mana'e Goods & Grindz, 808-558-8186 at Milepost 13. It’s a small market with a “fast food” mini-take out restaurant. Good (and only) stopover place if you are going or coming from the east end. They are open 8am to 5pm daily.
